Efficiency plays a crucial role in our growth and success. Our operations and processes are designed to minimise their impact on the environment. We have made significant efforts to reduce freshwater consumption, restore lands, preserve biodiversity and recycle waste. These ongoing efforts are a testament to our commitment to sustainable business practices.Water positivity and zero liquid discharge (ZLD)At Hindalco, we understand the importance of effective and efficient use of water. We follow the Group’s Water Stewardship Policy for water resource management, supported by Hindalco’s environment policy. There is a structured approach to ensure water security in areas where we operate. This is guided by our well-defined targets across all our operations.

Hindalco Industries Ltd. owns and operates 19 manufacturing units and 23 mines across India. We operate across large areas of land, within varied habitats. We believe in harmonious co-existence with nature and all its beings, and it is crucial for us to nullify any impact that our operations may have on the health and richness of surrounding ecosystems. We work in 8,699 ha of the operational mining area in the coal and bauxite sectors.

Our mining practices focus on the management of mining waste, sustainable ore extraction, rehabilitation of the mined area, regeneration activities and community engagement practices.

Our dedicated mining experts have developed a Sustainable Mining Charter (SMC) which helps our mining teams recognise the impact of our mining operations on environmental and socio-economic aspects, through a detailed systems-thinking approach.

Tailings management

Establishing safe tailings management is essential for our business. It is closely integrated with ore extraction and processing activities. Our corporate policy on tailings management is fundamental to the overall business strategy and is incorporated into site-wide policies, objectives and plans.
